Electronic Dance Music is music produced by electronic instruments and generally intended for a nightclub setting. Instruments typically used include synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers. Electronic dance originated in the late 1970s from percussive music genres such as disco and the innovations of the highly influential german electronic band Kraftwerk. Since the 1980s and 1990s several subgenres have manifested into existence. Such genres include techno, house, trance, electro, breakbeat, drum and bass. Cultural origins consist of European and North American styles. The music has been refered to as "technological spirituality" and is known for its wide span of sounds and musical fusions like artists such as Karsh Kale who blend typical dance beats with the cultural sounds of Oriental music. Although modern hip-hop commonly uses some of the same electronic instruments as EDM, it is instead considered non dance. Techno began in Detroit Michigan in 1988 by fusing traditional european electronica with american styles such as funk, electro, and electronic jazz. http://emergentsounds.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/rave.jpg
